Do The Prep Work Before You Go
The key to a relaxing, hassle-free picnic is doing all the prep work before you head out the door. If you’re preparing a gourmet steak dish that needs to marinate for a few hours before you place the meat on the grill, for example, plan ahead and give yourself time to whip up a marinade, then let your steaks soak in the hours leading up to your picnic. Make sure not to overdo it though, so you don’t end up with overly spicy steak.
The same goes for kebabs — if you’re planning on grilling kebabs at the park down the street, you should show up with the skewers already prepared and ready to throw on the grill. Trust us, you won’t want to sit in the grass cutting vegetables or handling raw meat with your bare hands when there isn’t a bathroom in sight. A few hours before you head out for your picnic, cut the steak and veggies into bite-sized pieces, then place them on the skewers and rest them in a tasty marinade for an hour or so (depending on the recipe) until you’re ready to go.
Throw Them On Ice
The number one rule when transporting raw meat is to keep it cold. Bring The Right Grilling Tools
If you’re counting on grilling tools being available at the park, you might want to think again. Some community parks have grills stocked with tongs, grill brushes, and other tools, but odds are they’re not clean. To be safe, bring your own set of grilling tools if you plan on using a community grill, and don’t forget a bag of charcoal. That way, you won’t end up at the park without anything to grill with or have to touch your gourmet steaks with a pair of dirty tongs.
Pack Out What You Pack In
Anyone who’s been camping before knows the golden rule: pack out what you pack in. The same rule applies to picnics, grillouts, barbecues, and other get-togethers in the park. Once you’re done grilling for your friends and family, make sure to throw away all your trash and pack everything back up in your cooler. When the grill is still warm (but not hot), use your grill brush to scrape off any gunk so it’s nice and ready for the next person to use. Remember, this is a communal space you’re using, and you want it to stay nice so you can come back and enjoy the facility again in the future. As a rule of thumb, leave the park looking nicer than it did when you arrived.
